Designed specifically for our female clientele over age 35, the Ramona House is a beautiful two-story home with semi-private rooms, a cozy porch, hardwood floors, a backyard fireplace and a gorgeous overlook on the second story with a breathtaking view of the ocean. Nestled in the beach town of Capistrano Beach, the home is secluded enough from the hustle and bustle of everyday life so that clients can focus on their sobriety for the duration of their stay.
The efficacy of a substance abuse treatment program is strongly correlated to the treatment facility’s accommodations for gender-specific and age-appropriate levels of care. Research shows women are more responsive to treatment in a supportive, safe and nurturing environment(1) (Cohen, 2000) and therapeutic relationships are based on mutual respect, empathy and compassion(2) (Covington, 2002b).
The age factor is an important one because people tend to relate to one another more readily if they are within a certain age range. The peer-support community that develops out of shared characteristics of that age group fosters meaningful camaraderie that will carry on long after the treatment program is over. Research shows that participation in peer-support communities such as these significantly reduces the risk of relapse(3) (Boisvert, Martin & Grosek, 2008).
Older women may not seek treatment for alcohol and drug abuse due to the shame and stigma attached to addiction. The root causes of substance abuse may stem from the loss of a spouse through death, experience with depression, or physical injury from falling(4) (Wilsnack & Wilsnack, 1995). Research indicates that older women are more susceptible to substance abuse when they experience some kind of role change or loss, such as not being able to play an important role as a mother, spouse or employee(5) (Wilsnack & Cheloha, 1987). If you suspect that a loved one may have a problem with drug and alcohol abuse, watch for signs of neglected appearance/hygiene, negligent payment of bills, mood swings, complaints about feeling depressed, hints of suicidal ideation, blackouts and malnutrition(6) (Cohen, 2000; CSAT, 1998d).
